Compiling a lucid overview of the Wars of the Roses for the festival fans who attended the lecture was challenging, but I tried to keep the complicated historical portion of the presentation grounded in Shakespeare's history plays.
My presentation was supplemented with a handout that detailed the geneology of the English monarchs who are important to the action chronicled in the histories. I also created a slideshow of over 200 images. Included were many paintings of English monarchs, as well as depictions of numerous actors and famous productions of King Richard III.
Keeping the historical portion grounded in Shakespeare's plays helped give my presentation direction, and assisted the audience in understanding the action of King Richard III in the context of Shakespeare's other histories.

We had a full house, and even had to bring in extra chairs for the latecomers in the audience!
